Track Lighting for Retail: A Specification Checklist for Merchandise-First Lighting
Make merchandise the brightest thing in the room without glare — a practical retail track lighting checklist drawn from how premium shops light their floors.
Retail track lighting has one job: make the product the most attractive thing in the room, and keep the light out of the shoppers eyes. Here is the checklist we use before quoting a retail project.
Beam, colour and consistency
Use narrow beams for small goods and wider washes for apparel walls. Specify CRI 90+ (and R9 > 50 so reds and skin tones read true) with SDCM < 3 so every spot on the run matches. This is the non-negotiable foundation.
- CRI 90+, R9 > 50, SDCM < 3 for colour consistency
- Narrow beams for small goods, wide wash for walls
- Separate circuits for window, mid-floor and feature wall
- Re-aim between seasons with magnetic modules

Group the zones
Window, mid-floor and feature wall should be on separate circuits so each can dim to its own scene. That points to 4-wire three-circuit track, or DALI-2 for per-fixture addressing across a large format.
Re-aim as the floor changes
Track lets light follow the planogram. Magnetic modules make re-aiming a five-minute job when the display changes — the flexibility high-turnover retail relies on.
Frequently asked questions
How many circuits does a shop need?
At least three (window, mid-floor, feature), mapped onto 4-wire track; larger stores move to DALI-2 for per-zone control.
What colour temperature for retail?
A consistent CCT across the floor — typically 3000-4000K — with tunable white where circadian or seasonal scenes are wanted.
